A probe will need to be installed on a Windows server at each physical location. The probe gives you the following abilities within the location's network:
●Facilitate discovery of IP-based devices including workstations, servers, switches, printers, etc...
●Push software agents out to Windows workstations and servers as well as OS X workstations
●Monitor devices that cannot have an agent installed (network devices, printers, etc...)
●Assist in some forms of remote control
●Cache patch data to the UNC path of your choice
●Collect log data from devices

Probes are generally best put on Domain Controllers or File Servers that have decent resources. NAS servers generally do not have good enough resources to host the primary probe, but could be used as a secondary probe for more advanced setups. Exchange, SQL, and Web Servers are generally avoided as choices to avoid performance issues with their primary services.
