Avoid becoming a data loss statistic

Think about the following scenario. You arrive to your office, coffee in hand, ready to go to work. You turn on your computer, and you see nothing but blue. If you’re like most, this might trigger a mild (or perhaps major) heart attack. You’ve been hit by the blue screen of death. How do you react?

You panic

You’re ready to throw your laptop out the window as your desperate attempts to revive your machine prove futile. Your situation is unfortunately not unique. In the USA, 140,000 hard drives encounter a crash every week, and every year more than 2 million laptops are stolen.

According to DreamTechie, research illuminating the danger of data loss is nearly unending. In 2015, 1.9 million records were compromised every day. 80,766 records compromised every hour. 1,346 records compromised  every minute, and 22 records compromised every second. That’s a lot of lost data.

If you’re not covered by a data loss solution, you’re not alone. Less than half (45.5 percent) of those surveyed believe they are “very prepared” to recover their IT assets in the event of a disaster. In fact, four percent are not prepared at all and 50.5 percent are only “somewhat prepared.” Even those who feel prepared often are unaware if their backup devices are tested regularly to ensure they are doing their job.

Global giants have suffered data loss setbacks that cost millions to recover from. CIO noted that “Target’s personal data of up to 110 million customers caused expensive problems (not to mention cost the CIO and CEO their jobs). In the first three months after the breach, Target spent $61 million on card reissues, fraud-detection systems, legal fees and other expenses.” While Target lost millions due to data, they also lost a good deal of public trust, and that might be even more expensive than compromised records.

You might be thinking, “I’m careful with my hardware. I’m not worried about a data loss from destroyed or stolen equipment,.” However, there are a number of ways you can suffer a data loss. From natural disasters destroying hardware like laptops and servers, to cyber threats which can hold your data ransom, it’s essential you have a backup plan in place.

Every moment you’re without your critical business data is time you are losing money. A lot of money to be exact. “Costs analysis reveals a relationship between the average total cost of the data breach and the size of the incident. In [2017’s] study, the average total cost ranged from $1.9 million for incidents with less than 10,000 compromised records to $6.3 million for incidents with more than 50,000 compromised records.”
