Mobility…appears we are working harder…not smarter.

If your anything like me you are a fan of statistics. It is always fascinating for me to see how others stack up in categories that affect our daily lives.

While perusing the Internet for news articles the other day I ran across an article that effects a pretty broad scope of todays workforce and their ability to be mobile. Pretty broad scope….huh? The stats are based on amount of time we spend working from a mobile device outside of normal business hours. The numbers at first glance appear staggering, 30 hours per month or about a month and a half over the course of a year. They cite that most of the work being done is either answering calls/emails and just trying to stay organized. Nearly half of the surveyed feel that this is simply not a choice when it comes to getting work done. What’s your take on this matter? How about we take a look at a few of the numbers from the Good Technology survey:

  • 68 percent of people check their work emails before 8 am.
  • The average American first checks his or her phone around 7:09 am.
  • 50 percent check their work email while still in bed.
  • 40 percent still do work email after 10 pm.
  • 69 percent will not go to sleep without checking their work email.
  • 57 percent check work emails on family outings.
  • 38 percent routinely check work emails while at the dinner table.

So here is how I stack up…

  • I do check emails before 8am
  • I am still in bed most mornings when checking email
  • I am doing email after 10 pm most nights
  • I do not remember the last time I went to sleep without attempting to check email
  • I check email on family outings (when I can get away with it!)
  • I DO NOT check email at the dinner table

Ok so I am in the norm according to this survey….but is it healthy? My wife and kids may have a different opinion…. However, I think it really depends on your role and the industry you serve. We service our clients 24×7 to ensure things are up and running. If we have a client down in the middle of the night I want to know about it. There are other emails I am looking for as well but in most cases none are near as important.

I think this is simply an interesting article to see where you stack up. It also speaks volumes about our current workforce…..and mobility is on an upward trend.

Here is another one that is pretty interesting article about work life balance when it comes to Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/06/sheryl-sandberg_n_1409061.html
